Impact of Sean John

Sean John was created by Sean “Diddy” Combs in 1998. Critics in the Hip-Hop community questioned his vision of creating a clothing line. As well as the fashion industry. This only fueled Combs vision to have a successful clothing brand even more. Combs has been known as a staple in the music industry for over 20 years. His impact on fashion is what inspired Hip-Hop rappers to create their own clothing lines. Brands like  RocaWear founded by Jay- Z and Apple Bottom Jeans founded by Nelly.  All have Combs to thank for paving the way.

Out of all the fashion collections that came from the Hip-Hop community. Sean John was the most respected. Andre Talley, Anna Wintour, and Tommy Hilfiger fully supported Combs transition into the fashion industry. His vision was to create a lifestyle sportswear brand that differed from Ralph Lauren. The collection also featured luxury pieces such as their signature parka fur. His brand embodies urban and black culture. Something that was essentially rare during that time.

Retailers were skeptical about carrying his brand. However, this led to Bloomingdales being the first luxury retailer to carry Sean John. Combs did not receive a formal fashion education. Due to his accomplishments in the music industry, he was able to gain mentorship from Tommy Hilfiger. It's clear he had all the tools to build a successful brand. His influence was recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).  After earning many nominations, in 2004 he finally won an award for menswear designer of the year. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of his line. He paid homage to Bloomingdales by having a Sean John pop up shop in New York City.

Sean John is still a well-known brand. His current pieces have been designed by his youngest son Christian Combs. The goal is reach to a younger audience. Christian Combs has an up and coming music career and a big presence on social media. That will help revive the brand. Currently, new Sean John pieces can be purchased at Macy’s and Sean John.com
